I am PhD student and I also conduct research for the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a specialised unit within UCT Graduate School of Business. My interest is the investment role of institutional investors (fund managers and asset owners) in channelling investments towards environmentally and socially impactful businesses. My PhD research explores the investment management practices of South African pension funds, particularly the enablers and hindrances to allocating investments towards businesses with positive social and environmental impact. Additionally, I conduct research for the Bertha Centre’s publication: “African Investing for Impact Barometer”. The research surveys a spectrum of investment strategies/products which seek to combine financial returns and positive impact on society and the environment in Africa. It covers portfolios and products offered by professional fund managers across Anglo-phone Africa. Over-and above the research, I speak at Pension fund investment conferences across the continent and contribute content for the annual Africa ESG Forum. I am also guest lecturer on the Post-Graduate Diploma in Management and MCom in Development Finance programmes offered at the UCTGSB.
